Make sure that your dog visits the vet at least once a year just like a human. Puppies at 6-15 weeks of age can get distemper, hepatitis and parainfluenza.
Canine Distemper is fatal to dogs of all ages. It is mainly puppies who are the victims of this disease, which attacks the dog's nervous system. Canine Distemper can lead to pneumonia. The outcome is usually death or euthanasia. Vaccinations are good to have to protect your dog from this disease.
Canine Hepatitis is a disease that affects the liver of a dog. Vaccinations are also effective with this disease.
Dogs can get parvovirus at any age. It is good to get the parvovirus shot, but it is not a guarantee that your dog is not going to pick up that virus. A dog does not need to be around a sickly dog to get parvovirus, which is an intestinal virus in dogs.
The symtoms of parvovirus are:
- depression
- vomiting
- bloody diarrhea
This disease is fatal and vaccinations are recommended. Treatment is supported with I.V. Fluids and other medication.
Here in Hawaii, we are so far rabie free.We are thankful for the Animal Quarantine that helps to keep our state from getting rabies. Dogs would have to stay in the Animal Quarantine for four months (120 days), but it decreases our chances of bringing in a disease.
But, in the mainland and other countries, animals can get rabies at 3 months of age then annually.
What is rabies?
Rabies spread through areas that is populated with wild animals and may be difficult to diagnose.
The effects are:
- Foam at the mouth
- Unusual/ Abnormal behavior
When taking your dog to the vet, you should always have your dog be checked for heartworm disease.
If your dog does not have this disease, you will then be able to put your dog on a preventative, such as intercettor or heart gard. The prevention for this disease can be started at 2-3 months of age for a puppy and is a monthly process for life. Symptoms may not show up for years. Your dog can get heartworm, if a mosquito bites him/her.
